South African University Application Guide

By AccessSA Editorial Team · Updated 17 September 2026

Admission requirements and deadlines differ by university and programme. Use the official university prospectus and application portal for every course you select.

Start early

Research institutions and programmes before applications close. Compare subjects, admission points or selection criteria, campus, cost, accommodation, professional accreditation and career options. Meeting minimum requirements may not guarantee admission to a competitive programme.

Prepare information and documents

Application steps

  1. Open the university’s official website independently.
  2. Read the prospectus and programme requirements.
  3. Confirm opening and closing dates.
  4. Create an applicant account on the official portal.
  5. Complete personal and academic information accurately.
  6. Select realistic programme choices in the permitted order.
  7. Upload clear documents and submit.
  8. Save the applicant or student number and monitor official messages.

Apply for funding separately

University admission and student funding are separate decisions. Complete the applicable NSFAS, bursary or other funding application before its deadline. Do not wait for an admission outcome if the funding instructions allow or require earlier application.

Accommodation

Residence applications may have a separate section, deadline and capacity limit. Apply through the official university process and consider verified alternatives. Never pay an accommodation deposit to an unverified social-media contact.

Application safety: Check the website domain carefully. Universities do not require your banking PIN or email password. Keep your portal password and OTP private.

Track and respond

Check the official portal and email regularly. Respond before deadlines if the university requests documents, accepts, declines, waitlists or makes a conditional offer. Follow the official change-of-mind or appeal process where available.

Official sources

Use the official admissions website of each university. The Universities South Africa website provides sector information, but applications are generally completed through the responsible institution or authorised central service.
