How to Apply for NSFAS Funding

By AccessSA Editorial Team · Updated 17 September 2026

NSFAS application dates, eligibility rules and supporting-document requirements can change between funding cycles. Start with the current instructions on the official NSFAS website.

Before applying

Documents

The portal will identify documents required for your circumstances. These may relate to identity, parents or guardians, household income, disability support or other declarations. Upload clear, complete documents and never submit altered information.

Application steps

  1. Go directly to the official NSFAS website.
  2. Create or access your official applicant account.
  3. Confirm your personal and contact details.
  4. Complete every required application section accurately.
  5. Upload the documents requested for your circumstances.
  6. Review the declaration and submit before the official deadline.
  7. Keep the confirmation and track the application through the official account.

NSFAS and university applications are separate

Applying for funding does not automatically apply for admission, and applying to a university or TVET college does not automatically create an NSFAS application. Complete each required process and observe its separate deadline.

Protect your account: Do not pay someone to create an NSFAS account or guarantee funding. Never share your password or OTP with an unofficial helper.

If information changes

Use the official account or contact channels to follow the current correction process. Avoid opening duplicate accounts unless NSFAS instructs you to do so.

If unsuccessful

Read the reason and the current appeal rules. Submit an appeal only through the official channel, within the stated period, and attach truthful evidence relevant to the decision.
