How to Find and Verify Legitimate Bursaries

By AccessSA Editorial Team · Updated 17 September 2026

A bursary can support tuition or other study costs, but every programme has different eligibility, obligations and coverage. Verify the provider and rules before submitting personal documents.

Where to search

How to verify an opportunity

  1. Find the provider’s official website independently.
  2. Confirm that the bursary appears on that website.
  3. Compare the name, field of study, year, closing date and application method.
  4. Read what costs are covered and whether work-back, service or repayment conditions apply.
  5. Check contact details against those published by the organisation.
  6. Read the privacy notice before uploading identity or financial documents.

Check eligibility before applying

Review citizenship or residency, academic results, institution, qualification, year of study, household circumstances, location and any employment or service commitment. Apply only with accurate information and submit every required document before the deadline.

Possible scam signs: payment for an application form, guaranteed funding, pressure to act through WhatsApp only, requests for a PIN or OTP, a misspelled website domain, or a personal bank account for “registration fees.”

Prepare a bursary file

Keep certified or clear copies as required, results, proof of registration or acceptance, household evidence, a CV and a motivation letter. Use descriptive filenames and keep a record of every application and reference number.

If selected

Read the agreement carefully before accepting. Understand what is funded, payment arrangements, academic conditions, reporting duties and any work-back requirement. Ask the provider to explain unclear clauses in writing.

Official checking points

Confirm opportunities with the funding organisation and the financial-aid office of the relevant institution. Use South African Government and official institutional websites when a programme is publicly funded.
