How to Apply for UIF Benefits

By AccessSA Editorial Team · Updated 17 September 2026

UIF supports qualifying contributors in circumstances covered by the Unemployment Insurance Fund. The official uFiling website currently directs employee benefit claims to the newer UIF Online service, so use the current official route.

Confirm the applicable benefit

UIF provides different types of benefits subject to current law and requirements. These may include unemployment and certain illness, maternity, adoption, parental or dependant-related benefits. The documents and eligibility rules differ, so select the correct benefit and read its official instructions.

Prepare before claiming

Application steps

  1. Start from the Department of Employment and Labour or official UIF website.
  2. Use the current official benefit-application service at UIF Online.
  3. Create or access your account through the verified service.
  4. Choose the correct benefit type.
  5. Complete the claim accurately and upload requested documents.
  6. Submit and retain the reference or confirmation.
  7. Track the claim and respond to official requests.

Important service change

The official uFiling site states that employee benefit claims are no longer processed on the uFiling portal and directs claimants to UIF Online. Employers may still use uFiling for registration, declarations and contributions. Always follow the latest notice shown on the official service.

Fraud warning: Do not pay a private person to approve or speed up a claim. Never share an OTP, banking PIN or account password.

If records are missing

Check that your employment and contribution records are accurate. Contact the employer and UIF through official channels when information is missing or incorrect. Keep payslips, employment documents and communications that may assist.

If a claim is delayed or unsuccessful

Read the status or reason, confirm whether more information is required, and use the official enquiry, correction, review or appeal route applicable to the decision. Keep a record of dates and references.
