How to Complete the Z83 Form Correctly

By AccessSA Editorial Team · Updated 17 September 2026

The Z83 form is used when applying for advertised positions in South African government departments. A clear, complete form helps the department determine whether you meet the requirements for the vacancy.

Before you start

Download the current Z83 form from the Department of Public Service and Administration or use the form supplied with the vacancy. Read the entire advert first. Record the job title, department, reference number and closing date. Prepare the supporting documents requested in the advert.

Complete each section carefully

  1. Position: Write the exact job title and reference number from the advert. Do not use a general title.
  2. Personal information: Enter your names, identity details and contact information clearly. Use contact details that you check regularly.
  3. Language and disability information: Answer truthfully. This information supports fair recruitment and workplace planning.
  4. Qualifications: Provide the requested information and ensure it agrees with your CV.
  5. Work experience: Give relevant employers, positions and dates. Explain gaps honestly when asked.
  6. References: Use people who know your work and can be contacted. Ask their permission first.
  7. Declaration: Read the declaration, then sign and date the form. An unsigned application may be rejected.

How your CV should support the form

Your CV should provide fuller details about your qualifications, employment history, responsibilities and achievements. Dates and job titles must agree with the Z83 form. Tailor the CV to the advertised duties instead of sending an unrelated generic CV.

Avoid these mistakes: leaving out the reference number, using an old form, submitting after the deadline, sending an unsigned form, giving inconsistent dates, or attaching documents that were not requested.

Submitting the application

Follow the method stated in the vacancy. Some departments accept email or online applications, while others give a physical or postal address. Use the specified subject line and file format. Keep a copy of the advert, completed form, CV and proof of submission.

After submitting

Government recruitment may take time. Only shortlisted candidates are often contacted. Never pay anyone to submit a Z83 form, arrange an interview or guarantee employment.
